Enjoy The Benefits Of Having Your Dryer Duct Professionally Cleaned

For many of us, cleaning our dryer filter after each load of laundry may seem sufficient. However, the design of many newer construction homes—which positions the washer and dryer closer to the center of the home rather than along an exterior wall—has necessitated a new and important trade called “dryer duct cleaning.” You see, lint is highly combustible and becomes a fire hazard when it accumulates in your dryer duct, and the longer the duct, the more areas for lint to accumulate.

The United States Fire Administration reports that there are an average of 2,900 clothes dryer fires in American homes annually, causing five deaths, 100 injuries, and $35 million in property loss. FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) found that the incidence of clothes dryer fires was greater during the fall and winter, peaking in January. “Failure to clean” was deemed to be the leading cause of dryer fires, with dust, fiber, and lint being the first thing to ignite.

The Problem With Today’s Dryer Vents

Now that many dryers are located centrally in the home, their ducts have to travel far greater distances, twisting and turning before reaching an outside vent. What this means is that there is a larger chance that dust and debris will become impacted inside your ductwork. As you can imagine, having a “dust boulder” wedged in your dryer duct is a fire hazard and also greatly hampers the efficiency of your clothes dryer. This means you’ll notice that your clothes take longer to dry, which means you may also see an uptick in your energy bills.

Your clothes dryer works by forcing hot air through a turning drum filled with wet clothing. During this process, lint is created and much of it is trapped inside the dryer’s filter. However, some lint manages to make it past the filter and into the vent system where it can accumulate (especially in places where the ductwork bends or turns). When a dryer duct is blocked by accumulating lint, it doesn’t take much for the dryer to overheat and start a fire.
